Chihuahua Info

History

The Chihuahua often called a "Chi is the smallest dog in the world.  Archeological finds show that the breed originated in Mexico as a descendent of the Techichi dog that belonged to the Aztec Indians.  It is the only dog that has originated in North America.

Breed Standard

A graceful, alert, swift moving, compact little dog with a lot of expression.  A well balanced little dog not to exceed 6 pounds.  A well rounded head with large round eyes.  The Chihuahua can have either a long or short coat.

Temperament

They are good with families if the children are gentle and patient.  Because of their small size they require little exercise and are good apartment or house dogs.  Chihuahuas need very little grooming, only needing occasional bathing and brushing.

Great Dane Info

Origin

Despite the name, the Great Dane originates from Germany rather than Denmark although its ancestors span thousands of years and many countries and regions.  Large dogs resembling the Great Dane have been depicted in art from Egypt, China, Rome, and Greece perhaps as far back as 3000 BC.

The origin of the Great Dane was probably developed from a cross of the Irish Wolfhound and the English Mastiff among others and the dog breed continues to be a member of the Mastiff group.  The English name for the breed, Great Dane, comes to us from the translation of the French name for the breed, Grand Danois which means big Danish.

The origin of the Great Dane dog indicates that the breed was used to hunt wild boar and other large game in Germany and throughout Europe and this early ancestor was first called a Boar Hound.  Gradually the Great Dane became popular as more than a hunting dog throughout the 1800s in Germany.  The aristocracy and other well-to-do dog fanciers began to own the dogs as a novelty and kept them within their houses and estates.  The Great Dane began to be used as a show dog by the end of the 1800s although it continued to be used as a hunting dog as well.

Temperament

Called "Gentle Giant", the Great Dane is nothing short of majestic.  Sometimes referred to as the "King of Dogs", this extremely large dog is known for being strong yet elegant, with a friendly, calm, loyal, and inteligent personality.  Striking in the show ring, yet very popular as a family pet.  They don't bark much, but make EXCELLENT guard dogs due to their intimidating size.  A Great Dane must always be courageous, friendly, and dependable, never timid or aggressive.

Breed Standard

The head should be rectangular, and finely chiseled.  The body should be strong and muscular.  The coat should be short, thick, and glossy.  Colors approved by AKC are Fawn, Blue, Black, Harlequin, Mantle, and Merle.

                                                                The Importance of Puppy Socializing
From the very start, a puppy learns important lessons through his experience of the world around him. Even in the first few weeks as he snuggles with his dam, wrestles with his littermates and is handled by his breeder each day, the personality traits and social skills that he will have all of his life are beginning to form. As the weeks go by, exposure to a variety of experiences is crucial to his becoming a well-rounded adult. Studies have shown that the first three months in a puppy's life strongly influence what kind of companion he will grow to be and how he will react to the world. Will he shy away from children? Will he be afraid of people in hats? Or will he be easy going and adaptable in a variety of situations? Early socialization or the lack of it is a vital determinant of a dog's lifelong behaviors. Without proper socialization, it is unlikely that a pup will become the adult dog he could have been, whether as a competitor in canine events or as a happy, well adjusted pet.
